Category:Gourock linkspan
The ferry terminal at Gourock is part of the railway station and pier facility. The Kilcreggan Steps berth for passenger ferries has access levels for stages of the tide, the linkspan provides ramp access suitable for wheelchair users.
(See Category:Kilcreggan Steps, Gourock, for the old and new steps)
The station and pier opened in 1889. Car ferry services began in 1954 using ferries (starting with MV Arran) with a built-in hoist platform lifting cars to pier level. In 1971 the linkspan introduced a faster roll-on/roll-off connection which continued until a change in subsidy arrangements ended scheduled vehicle services in 2011. The linkspan continues in use for passenger services and as a back-up relief port when linkspans at Wemyss Bay or Ardrossan are out of action, often due to high winds. Maintenance problems stopped vehicle use on 17 September 2019, linkspan renewal work began in October 2020, and the completed linkspan was handed over on 2 March 2021.
