This monument is by sculptor and monumental mason Thomas Potts (c.1824–1891) of Harrogate.

The inscription says:

  • "Erected by a friend to the memory of Sergeant Major Johnston, late of the 8th K.R.I Hussars, who died November 28th 1882 aged 49 years. He was one of the survivors of The Gallant Six Hundred in the Charge of the Light Brigade October 25th 1854 & served in the following engagements with his regiment.
  • Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, Tchernaya, Bulcanak, McKenzie's Farm, Kertch, Yennakale, Kotah, Chundaree, Kotahkescrai, Cwalior, Powree, Sindwhad, Koorwye, Koondrye, and Boordah. (Note: This is a quotation from the monument. Many of these are archaic spellings of historical battles)
  • When can their glory fade! Oh, the wild charge they made, All the world wondered, Honour the charge they made, Honour the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred."
