Great King Streets is part of the New Town of Edinburgh - one of the best preserved examples of urban planning in the world. It was one of the major streets planned by Reid and Sibbald as the first extension Northwards of the original Edinburgh New Town. Building work started in 1817. The metaphysician Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet, lived at No 16; the president of the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Academician, Sir William Allan RA lived at No 72; one of Scotland's greatest architects and designer of the New Town, William Henry Playfair lived at No 63 and the Reverend Edward Irving lived at No 60.
