This series of photos has its origins from the post World War One period, when the National Museum endeavored to obtain a portrait of each New Zealander who had received a medal during the Great War. Families sent in photographic portraits of their family's medal recipient along with correspondence giving background information.

These photographs were each given an F-number, and in 1920 were exhibited on boards by the National Museum.

Partly for preservation reasons, and partly for ease of access, each photographic portrait has subsequently been taken out from its board and been stored (physically and digitally) individually, resulting in this series. This will enable researchers to search for each Great War Medal Recipient by name and to link to the digital image.
