Hastings quartering Valence (Earl of Pembroke)
-
Transposed version, quarters reversed, rare usage (e.g. Armorial de Gelre and Gloucester, east window), possibly a form of heraldic courtesy to give greater honour to the greater title
Arms first adopted by w:John Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings (1287-1325), son of John Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings by his wife Isabel de Valence, daughter and heiress of w:William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke. His son was w:Laurence Hastings, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1319-1348). Quartered subsequently in 1389 by w:Reynold Grey, 3rd Baron Grey of Ruthin (1362-1440), when found to be (through his maternal grandmother Elizabeth Hastings) the heir general of w:John Hastings, 3rd Earl of Pembroke (1372-1389) (Source: Cokayne, G.
