Hill-forts on Islay refer to the elevated sites of ancient hill-forts. The name of the hill is almost always preceded by the Celtic word dun, "hill-fort." Many thousands of this type of name can be found from the western isles to the Ukraine. On Islay as elsewhere the forts were placed at strategic elevations commanding an entry point on the coast or over then populated areas.
