The districts of Northern Ireland are the first administrative level of Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is split into eleven districts starting in 2015, each of them with their own local government. From 1972 until 2015, there were 26 districts which replaced the older historical subdivisions, the counties. The counties and county boroughs, in turn, which existed from 1921 to 1972, continue to exist for the purposes of lieutenancy and shrievalty.
