The Holy Cave at Hawking Craig was excavated in the 19th century and the evidence indicates use from the late stone age through to late medieval times. It was used by St Mungo / St kentigern and its nearby lost holy well known as the 'Wishing Well' had curative properties and the local minister used to baptise children here. The famous Hunterston Brooch was found nearby and cairns removed in the 1830s were said to be graves of vikings killed here in a skirmish in 1263.
