w:Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Carlisle (1629–1685) was the son and heir of Sir William Howard of Naworth Castle, Cumberland, the grandson of w:Lord William Howard of Naworth (the third son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk by his wife Margaret Audley) who married Elizabeth Dacre, a daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Dacre, 4th Baron Dacre of Gilsland, 8th Baron Greystoke, heiress of Naworth Castle and Henderskelfe (later the site of Castle Howard, built by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle)
