Deutsch: Reichsabtei
· English: Imperial abbey
English: Imperial abbeys (, also Reichsklöster and Reichsstifte) were religious houses within the Holy Roman Empire which, for some period during their existence, had the status of Reichsunmittelbarkeit ("imperial immediacy"). Therefore those houses, answerable directly to the Emperor, were self-ruling territories (however small), independent of other lordships. Several did not survive the Reformation.
