The Nîmes artist-painter Jules Salles (1814-1900) financed the building in 1894 of the gallery to house exhibitions, concerts and Art conferences. Designed by the Nîmes architect Max Raphel (1863-1943), it shows nineteenth-century eclecticism, with forms and ornementation drawn from older periods. The sculptures by the Nîmes sculptor Léopold Morice that flank the entry represent Painting and Music. The other ornamental sculptures are by Brémond-Boissier and Léopold Mérignargues.
