Wellington railway station

Opened in 1885 for passengers in Featherston Street near the junction with Bunny Street and opposite the foot of Mulgrave Street as Wellington railway station.

Lambton railway station

Name changed to Lambton railway station in December 1908 after Government acquired Thorndon railway station along with Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company
Platform closed July 1936. The Evening Post, 16 July 1936 Demolished twelve months later after new building opened

(there was no building named Wellington railway station from December 1908 until the new building opened in 1937)

"WELLINGTON RAILWAY STATION. This building, which does duty as a passenger station, as it has done for the last twenty-five years, is neither creditable to the Government, nor in keeping with the dignity or requirements of the Empire City. It is absolutely inadequate and unsuitable to cope with the increasing suburban traffic. The facilities afforded for the issue of tickets during ordinary periods are insufficient, and at holiday times are impossible. The offices and luggage rooms are unsuitable. No private firm would be allowed to carry on a business of this magnitude and work their employees under the existing conditions as the Government now do. The accommodation provided by both waiting rooms is of that character that the less said about them the better. Your council has again and again urged upon the Government the necessity of improvements, but without success. Unfortunately our efforts have not been supported by the press of the city." President of the Chamber of Commerce, The Evening Post, 18 February 1908

"The task of preparing the plans has been given by the Government into the hands of a Wellington private architect, Mr W Gray Young, . . . " The Evening Post, 16 May 1928 (the new building opened in June 1937)
