Seagulls (Turkish: Martılar) in Turkey: The seagulls, or "martılar", are part of urban life in Istanbul and some other seaside cities of Turkey, such as Çanakkale. People have an affection for these birds, just like for pigeons and for stray dogs and cats, and feed them. Sharing your simit or anything edible (like a biscuit in one of the pictures in this category) is an urban tradition, especially in Istanbul. The seagulls are present in Turkish literature also: "Martılar ah eder, çırparlar kanat" - Nazım Hikmet.
