Among the commonly used sculpting stones, only marble has a slight translucency (i.e. subsurface scattering) that is comparable to that of human skin. This translucency has been leveraged by several artists to produce the effect of thin veils covering faces or even entire bodies.

Note: Some of the media in the parent category Sculptures of veiled women simulate this effect with other materials, minus the actual translucency.
