Crimes like this were perpetrated by mobile killing units organized by Nazi authorities. They swept through eastern Europe killing large numbers of defenseless civilians (men, women, and children). Jews were particularly targeted. The euphemistic name used by the killers for these units was "Einsatzgruppen" or "special assignment group".
