  • Sculpture and memorial monument after an 1869 design by sculptor Louis Samain; more information

Semain's plaster model was acquired by the Belgian state in 1894. In 1895 the sculpture was installed on Avenue Louise, on a bluestone octagonal pedestal with curved walls designed by architect Edmond Le Graive.

The poignant scene—a runaway black slave and child being attacked by dogs—was inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.
