English: The National Railway Museum in York was opened in 1975, using the building that used to be York North locomotive depot (roundhouse), later York TMD (Traction Maintenance Depot), superseding the York railway museum sited elsewhere that dated from 1927. Despite having become a TMD, the building still had two turntables in it dating from the days of steam. This building was closed in 1990 and rebuilt, with exhibits temporarily moved to the former York goods depot across Leeman Road, already in use as a museum store (the Peter Allen Building). That eventually became the Station Hall, while the rebuilt building on the MPD site became the new Great Hall, retaining one turntable, but now with much more space for higher exhibits like the signal gantry.
