After World War II military engineering teams checked millions of localities for hidden landmines and unexploded ordnance. After each house was checked, the leader of the team responsible for checking the locality would leave a note on the facade of the building, usually in red paint, informing there is no landmines inside. Thousands of such marks remain in Central and Eastern Europe, usually written in either Russian (Мин нет) or one of the local languages. Some of them are preserved as historical monuments.
