The North Carolina Exploring Cultural Heritage Online (NC ECHO) project was an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant that ran from 1999 to 2012. NC ECHO sought to identify every institution in the state open to the public and holding a permanent non-living collection of unique materials, including archives, library special collections, art museums and arts councils, historic house museums, history museums, state historic sites and state parks. Over 1,000 such institutions were identified, and between 1999 and 2007, photos were taken of the institutions during site visits.
