Palacio Arzobispal is located on Plaza de la Independencia and Calle Venezuela in the Historic Center of Quito, the best-preserved, least altered historic center in Latin America. In Spanish, (El Centro Histórico de Quito) was constructed on what was once a 16th century Inca city at 2,850 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains near the Equator.

The Palacio Arzobispal, a majestic 16th-century edifice in Quito's UNESCO-listed Historic Center, originated after Pope Paul III established the Diocese of San Francisco de Quito in 1545. Construction began soon after on the northeast corner of Plaza de la Independencia, on land once owned by conquistador Núñez de Bonilla. Initially serving as the bishop's residence, it evolved into the archbishop's palace following Quito's elevation to archdiocese in 1786. In 1775, Spanish architect Antonio García redesigned it in neoclassical style, adding triangular pediments and Vatican emblems, blending Baroque roots with European elegance. Major renovations occurred in 1858 for structural upgrades and 1975–1978 to address decay from earthquakes and age. Once a hub for ecclesiastical and political decisions, it now features a stone courtyard, restricted 16th–19th-century art chapel, and vibrant shops, symbolizing Quito's colonial resilience amid Inca foundations and seismic trials. The Palacio Arzobispal is located inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches over 790 acres and contains 130 monumental buildings, 8,000 smaller properties. The Colonial Center of Quito has numerous Churches and Convents.
