Pinus elliottii, the slash pine, is a small to medium sized tree native to the southeastern United States that has a dozen or so specimens in 7th Brigade Park. Some have been planted by nearby residents while others originate from wind-blown seeds. Pinus elliottii is a major component of plantation forest in southeast Queensland. The Queensland Department of Education planted Pinus elliottii in school grounds in the mid 20th Century. The nearest such grove to 7th Brigade Park is in the grounds of the Virginia State School, which borders Downfall Creek at Sandgate Rd, Virginia.
