Po Rome was a Champa king who ruled over the Panduranga region, now referred to as the Phan Rang. His rule from 1627 to 1651 witnessed expanding trade, wars, a strategic marriage-based alliance, and global geopolitics led by the colonial Dutch and the colonial Portuguese in direct conflict and an arms race between the Cham and other Southeast Asian kingdoms. These global development ultimately ended the independent existence of a Hinduism-inspired Champa kingdom and civilization that began in late 2nd century and evolved over fifteen centuries in Amaravati (now Quang Nam), Vijayapura (now Binh Dinh), Kauthara (now Nha Trang) and Panduranga (now Phan Rang).

Po Rome is remembered for the agricultural and trading infrastructure he built, as well as some of the last and best preserved Hindu temples built in Vietnam before the colonial domination by European powers. A part of his history is documented in European literature as he sent two royal delegations to Europe in order to pursue social and trade ties without taking sides or war. He also sought closer relationships with Khmer in Cambodia and the Siamese kingdom based in Ayuthaya (Thailand). One of the temples he built is the Thap Po Rome with feature both the Hindu god Shiva, as well as the reliefs of king Po Rome and his wife. This temple is thus also a cenotaph to Po Rome. It remains active, and is a site of major Cham festivals.
