Cymraeg: Pentref yng Nghwm Afan yw Pontrhydyfen (neu Pont-rhyd-y-fen), ar lethrau'r bryniau lle mae Afon Pelenna yn rhedeg i mewn i Afon Afan. Mae yna bont amlwg yng nghanol y pentref (un o sawl pont) a adeiladwyd gan John Reynolds ym 1825. Hon yw "Y Bont Fawr", a oedd ar un adeg yn dwyn rheilffordd fach dros y cwm. Yn ddiweddarach roedd yn dwyn camlas i gario dŵr i'r gwaith haearn ger ardal Penycae (Oakwood nawr).
