Ra rafts were used in research expeditions which were undertaken to prove that a boat made from papyrus might cross the Atlantic Ocean from Afrika to America.
- First Ra expedition, 1969, failed. Due to defects in construction, the boat disintegrated so much that its crew had to be saved after having spent 56 days at sea, having covered ~5000 km.
- Improved version Ra II was successful, arriving in Barbados after a 6100 km journey, within 57 days.
