Deutsch: Diese Übersetzung ist berühmt, weil sie von Lessing scharf kritisiert wurde; einige Seiten des hier gescannten Exemplares tragen am Rand die Notizen eines Lesers, der dort Lessings Korrekturen eingetragen hat. Langes Übersetzung ist jedoch auch deshalb bemerkenswert, weil sie als eine der ersten ‚modernen‘ deutschen Übersetzungen auf den Reim verzichtet und dafür die Versmaße des Originals nachbildet. Lange erklärt diese Prinzipien in seiner Vorrede.
English: (Translation of Horace’ Odes and Ars poetica by Samuel Gotthold Lange [!], Halle 1752.) This translation is famous because it was harshly criticized by Lessing; some pages of the present copy show the annotations of a reader who has noted Lessing’s criticism in the margin. But Lange’s translation is also still noteworthy as one of the first ‘modern’ German translations which try to imitate the metre of the original and don’t add rhymes. Lange explains this principles in his preface.
