In Surguja district, there are many historic Hindu and Jain temple ruin sites and archaeological mounds in an area of about 75 square kilometers around Bhadwahi. The largest of these is the Satmahala site to the west of Bhadwahi. Another site east of Bhadwahi is the hamlet of Devgarh (Devtikara, Deogarh Chhattisgarh) with many mounds and scattered ruins in farmlands and along the banks of Rihand river, a tributary of Son river. Among these is a site with ruins of historic Shiva temple. Along with and near the ruins is a modern era temples. The local Hindus take parikrama (spiritual circumambulation), make offerings and pray at both before the ruins and the new temple structures. The regional legends link Devgarh–Bhadwahi to Maharishi Parasurama found in the Puranas.

These Shiva temple ruins are from the 11th to 12th century. The mutilated Hindu artwork include those of Surya, Uma-Maheswara, Ganga, Yamuna, Vishnu and others.
