Singapore Art Museum, at 71 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189555, occupies the former Saint Joseph's Institution building that was designed by Brother Lothaire and built in 1855. Saint Joseph's Institution had been founded three years earlier by the De La Salle Brothers, a French Catholic order. During World War II the building was used as a Red Cross hospital and housed the Air Raid Precautionary Group. In 1988, the school relocated to a larger site at Malcolm Road. The Museum officially opened in the building on 20 January 1996. The building was gazetted as a national monument on 14 February 1992.
