English: The monastic site was founded by St. Mochta in the 6th century. The monastery was refounded by Donnchad Ua Cerbaill, King of Airgíalla, and Áed Ua Cáellaide as house of Augustinian canons in 1148 and dissolved in 1539. (See Aubrey Gwynn and R.
