English: Prior to 1923 access was only by being hauled in a net up or down a precipice topped by a tower from the top of which a reception balcony extended. The top of the tower is level with the monastery. In 1923 the hauling method was abandoned for a robust stairway of 146 steps bringing one up the precipice sometimes through tunnels, over bridges or across a cliff face. A solid stone wall borders the outside of the stairs. The top arrives in the vicinity of the same balcony. Being readily observable, this stairway and tower account for a great many of the photographs. The stairway is usually photographed with a line of people ascending. In this category have been placed the few pictures of the tower or balcony alone.
