Italiano: Statua di Tolomeo II Filadelfo, circa 285-246 a.C. Inv. 22682.
English: Statue of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, about 285-246 BC Inv. 22682.
Originally the statues of Ptolemy II and of Arsinoe II (inv. 22681) were located in Heliopolis, erected by Ptolemy to celebrate the deification of his sister-wife Arsinoe, who died in 270 BC. It is plausibly believed that from Heliopolis they were brought to Rome by Caligula, who wanted to create a parallel between himself and Ptolemy by decorating a building dedicated to the deification of his sister-wife Drusilla, who also died prematurely. Caligula also commissioned the second statue, dedicated to Drusilla deified, made with the appearance of Arsinoe and also exhibited in the Gregorian Egyptian Museum (inv. 22683). Probably on the same occasion the statue of Queen Tuya was also brought to Rome (inv. 22678).
