English: One of the most recognizable Geluk monasteries of Ladakh, which looks like a replica of the Potala Palace. Thikse was established during the period of Geluk expansion in Ladakh, probably about the middle of the fifteenth century. It was founded by Pelden Sherab, the nephew of Sherab Zangpo, and located about 19 Km from Leh on the Leh–Manali highway.
