Category:Tropologion
The Greek book Tropologion or Troparologion corresponds roughly the Georgian Iadgari, the Syriac Tropligin and the Armenian Šaraknoc', although these traditions are more or less indepedent from the history of Byzantine music. I its earliest form, the tropologion was just a text book, but since the 6th century, it had modal signatures and incipits to clarify the melos of the hymn. In this form it was still in use until the 13th century. The Iadgari and the Šaraknoc’ have an own notation since the 10th century which has a lot common between the Armenian and Georgian tradition. While Georgian chant was continued as an oral tradition of polyphony until the 1970s, the Armenian Šaraknoc' became still printed during the 19th century and survived as an oral tradition until the 20th century.
