The Masked lapwing (Vanellus miles), also called 'spur-winged plover' or 'wide-awake' (due to it flying and calling at night), is a conspicuous and noisy resident of Chermside. It frequents the open, grassy areas and nests on these. Wide-awakes aggressively defend eggs and chicks.
