The Peace River is navigable from Athabasca Landing to the Vermilion Chutes (sometimes called the "Vermilion Falls") and from the Vermilion Chutes to Hudson's Hope. Small boats, like canoes and york boats, could run the rapids, or could be "tracked" upstream. The Northland Call was a sternwheel steamship, with an exceptionally shallow draft, whose owners had hoped could transit the shallows at Athabasca Landing, where the river joined the Athabasca River and the Vermilion Chutes. It only made the upstream journey once, during the river's annual high water, and the trip left the vessel requiring months of repair.
