Verny Commemorative Museum[edit]

The Verny Commemorative Museum [1] is a small museum located in Verny Park [2] near JR Yokosuka Station in Yokosuka, Japan. The museum and the park are named after the French naval engineer François Léonce Verny' (December 2, 1837 - May 2, 1908) [3] in appreciation for his great achievements that broke ground a dynamic change in Japan after the end of Japan's isolation. Verny came to Japan in the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate and in 1865 administered the construction of Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. A huge steam-hammer originally made in Holland and then imported to Japan from France in 1866 is exhibited at the museum.
