Washington Irving High School, now Washington Irving Campus, is a public school building at 40 Irving Place between East 16th and 17th Streets in Manhattan, New York City. It was designed by C.B.J. Snyder and built in 1913; an extension on 16th Street was designed by Walter C. Martin and built in 1938. The school's 1885 bust of Washington Irving – who never lived on Irving Place, although the street is named for him – is by Friedrich Beer.
The school began as Girls' Technical High School, a branch of Wadleigh High School, in a building on Lafayette Street. The first all-girl public high school in the city, it moved into the newly-built Irving Place building in 1913, and its name was changed to Washington Irving. The school became co-educational beginning in September 1986.
As of 2012, the building is shared by 4 schools—the High School for Language and Diplomacy, Gramercy Arts High School, the Academy for Software Engineering, and Washington Irving High School. The last is scheduled to be closed by 2015.
