Varsavaux was not "Lucien Valery", although he tried to insinuate himself (and largely succeeded by cashing in on the name) as such when he took over the studio of the original Lucien Valery, after he died in 1929. As a result there has been endless confusion, especially in serious and national collections. Varsavaux should have been prosecuted for passing off, or impersonation.

Lucien Valery was one of the several pseudonyms of the noted British/Polish photographer Count Stanisław Julian Ignacy Ostroróg, see en.wikipedia, son of the celebrated Polish photographer, Count Stanisław Julian Ostroróg, who traded as Walery, a name he chose to honour his wife, Waleria.
