Wrongly named category

[edit]

@Prototyperspective: These charts don't show "change" in GHG emissions as the category title, "Category:Charts showing countries' per capita, total and change in GHG emissions", now states. The charts do show per-capita and per-country/region emissions, and country/region population, but that makes for a long title. Also, GHG isn't co-extensive with carbon dioxide (the different charts are not identical in that regard). Given the small number of images that could even fit within this category, the category doesn't seem to be particularly useful. I'm not sure how you'd want to handle this. I propose just moving them up to Variable-width bar charts and deleting this sub-category. RCraig09 (talk) 03:57, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That is incorrect, they do show a change in GHG emissions via the color of the bars. I know that CO2 is not the same GHG but aren't the (or only some of the?) charts showing CO2 equivalents? We can easily rename the category for these so far 9 files – what about "Charts showing countries' per capita, total and change in CO2 emissions"?
Not everything in the image needs to be in cat title, I thought about leaving out "change in" so that would be possible too. Some images also show "regions" in addition to countries, but again: not everything needs to be in the category title and in this cat users could also add charts that only show that for countries but not regions (which are many countries combined). I find this category very useful, I don't understand why you don't – why clutter some category where nobody will find these among the countless other unrelated images? Moreover, some cats can be added to this category, making the images more easily findable and it allows people to easily find the latest chart of this type from similar charts as well as going through the historic states of the charts which are all neatly findable in this cat. It would become even more useful if people add more images of that sort here and there aren't many charts that combine and integrate different data into one chart like this. I don't see a single chart in which change is illustrated, especially by the color of the bars which are arbitrarily chosen to distinguish from adjacent bars (annual amount isn't a "change"). There aren't "countless other unrelated images" in Category:Variable-width bar charts; there are presently only five other images. At least, one shouldn't wait before making this category name concise and correct. Suggestion: Charts showing both per capita and total greenhouse gas emissions (readers won't automatically know what "GHG" means). RCraig09 (talk) 17:03, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The colors are not arbitrary and the change is illustrated as described in the top right here for example. Edit: but you're right that doesn't apply to all the images, didn't notice that.
  • Right, not in that category but in other categories. Also I'd like to have the cats that I created as diffused as possible so that images are in subcats and only few images that don't yet fit into anywhere outside of them.
  • The name is correct as far as I understand it. Maybe this new name would be more concise, that's a good alternative albeit it doesn't have the word countries in it. I'll move them to this new title, thanks.

D'oh! I now see that three charts did have color-coded "change" legends in the upper right. In any event, I think the current naming situation is good. RCraig09 (talk) 19:28, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
