Historic Darby Wharf

[edit]

The modern wharf does not much resemble the historic, nor does the wharf district of Salem Harbor look like its colonial self. In essence most of the old wharves have been ingested into the shoreline by the method of landfill. That big green before the Custom House is placed on fill, in case perhaps you were wondering how the frail Nathaniel Hawthorne and his crew were able to haul tons of goods several hundred yards up the wharf on a regular basis. The answer is, they didn't. When the wharf got too short they extended it by at least its length again, and the extension is mainly what you have been taught is the old wharf.Botteville (talk) 11:41, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
