Tendency is to put between brackets what it is (painter), (sculptor), and to use a comma notation to indicate where it is, and to have an extensible location disambiguation in line with other location disambiguations. --Foroa (talk) 15:47, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

In this case “New York City” is used more as a way to distinguish it from others & not necessarily as a physical location as in here Category:Streets in Manhattan, here Category:Rivers of Florida or here Category:Buildings called flatiron. In addition, Wikipedia uses the format "(location)" for buildings as seen here Category:Skyscrapers between 150 and 199 meters. I think a move is unnecessary. There is no other General Electric Building elsewhere to confuse this with. The only building likely to be confusing is the GE Building, which is also in New York City. Station1 (talk) 23:06, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

That's true; I hadn't noticed. There's also an image in the category that has something to do with Chicago. So if the category name is changed, those images would have to removed from the category. Would that make them harder to find? And as only one image, would each go into a category General Electric Building (Denver) or General Electric Building (Chicago)? If not, would disambiguation be needed for this category as the only one? Just to be clear, I don't normally do much on Commons, and came here almost by accident, so I don't want to hold up a move if everyone else thinks it's a good idea. I propose moving this category to Category:570 Lexington Avenue to solve the confusion. I just came across this category (6 years after the last comment). I know that history and architecture sources like to remind people that this is the "General Electric Building" or "RCA Victor Building", but those do seem confusingly similar to Category:30 Rockefeller Plaza, which was the "GE Building" or the "RCA Building", and is also in Midtown Manhattan. I've already made a Category:General Electric Building disambiguation page, and redirected Category:GE Building to Category:30 Rockefeller Plaza because that's a far less ambiguous name, and that building was renamed "Comcast Building", a name I assume nobody uses because most of America knows it's called "30 Rock". This page's present name Category:General Electric Building (New York City) seems like it would keep causing confusion over time, even if it's distinct to computers: If you asked anyone outside New York City what "General Electric Building (New York City)" was, they'd be sure it was 30 Rock, and have probably have never heard of 570 Lexington. As for the other ambiguous names: I think parentheses is the usual on Commons unless the location is a subdivision of the topic (e.g. Category:University of California, Los Angeles, or the store names I created under Category:Apple Stores by country a while back). (Note on Chicago: The File:PCC-Chicago-1.jpg image is of the Clark Street bridge, but I've had trouble finding what "General Electric" building could have been there. Sounds like a good idea to me. (Re the Chicago image: That might not be Clark St. The image was originally uploaded on Dutch WP with a description that translates as "This black and white shot I made from the 28th floor of the GE Building in Chicago in 1950." Maybe Voogd075 remembers where this was photographed from. Perhaps both the camera location and the building across the river are demolished now.
