National Trust images

[edit]

As discussed on the GLAM Pilot 2 Talkpage, I would be very keen for the Trust to give consideration to the uploading of images to Commons for use in articles. Off the top of my head, some issues to think about:

  • The Trust's unique access - as property owners, and in the interests of conservation/security etc., I believe that the trust prohibits/limits photography inside its properties. That is entirely understandable. But the Trust does undertake such photography itself, or permits others to do so, for its guidebooks etc. It would be hugely helpful to Wikipedia readers if a limited selection of such interior photographs could be uploaded to Commons, to enable their use in articles on Trust properties. An example is [[Category:Chartwell]]. We do not hold a single interior shot, and the Chartwell article is serious diminished as a consequence. This is a particularly strong case, as the reason Chartwell is an important property, and enjoys a Grade I listing, is its connection to Churchill, rather than its architecture. Thus, an image of the study would hugely enhance the article. This would be of benefit to readers world-wide, furthering both Wikipedia's objectives and the Trust's charitable aims.
  • Commercial interests and copyright - obviously, the loss of copyright that uploading to Commons would require is a serious consideration. The Trust's copyright is a valuable asset that the charity would want to preserve, and exploit itself. But a limited upload may not seriously compromise its commercial position.
  • Commercial interests and Wikipedia - Wikipedia has enormous reach, as the 5th most-accessed website in the world. I think it very probable that some potential visitors to Trust properties will "research" them in advance by looking at Wikipedia; in the same way that potential restaurant-goers use review websites. It is therefore likely that having well-written, well-researched and well-illustrated Wikipedia articles on its properties would be of commercial benefit to the Trust. There could therefore be a "win-win" in the trade-off between this point and the one above.

I hope these points are of assistance in any discussions, and look forward to participating in these. KJP1 (talk) 10:41, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Topics of particular value/interest

[edit]

In addition to the interior Chartwell images mentioned above, I would be very interested in having Commons access to this image, [1]. At some point, I would like to undertake improvements to the Tredegar House article. It is very weak on architecture. As part of the work around this, I have recently created an article on Plas Machen, the Morgans' ancestral home before Tredegar. We could also do with an article on John Morgan, 6th and last Lord Tredegar, whose death saw the extinction both of the title and of the family's 600-year connection with South Wales. An image would greatly assist the drafting of this. KJP1 (talk) 10:13, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
