Leizelt's fantasy[edit]

Leizelt never saw Salem Harbor. The buildings on the right have to be Brigg's Shipyard of Salem, but they do not resemble other woodcuts of Brigg's there. They do look like Brigg's of Boston. The woodcuts of that were available to the artist. The center view of a ship tied up to a mud bank is pure fantasy. The wharf area preceded Brigg's. There were several in that area, including Darby's. Leizelt was a European engraver at the time of the Revolutionary War. His work on ports of the time could not possibly be based on inspection; however, he did inform the reader that a port existed in Salem.Botteville (talk) 14:33, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
