Basemap

[edit]

What basemap should we use for locator maps in Alberta (and canada for that matter)?
my proposal: Image:Census_divisions_AB.png Qyd 17:29, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like the "gray" map with red location. I saw green location for Alberta census division 6, but I think red stands out better. It is also the color used in a number of other maps.Cadillac 22:59, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All maps in Category:Locator maps of census divisions in Alberta have now red highlight on grey basemap. Qyd 03:24, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Qyd, it does look better Cadillac 03:19, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

City Map insert

[edit]

Take a look at the Wikipedia:Birmingham site on wikipedia. They do an interesting thing by putting a second "window" showing where the city fits in relation to the district. In our case, could we do something similar such as add a window showing a blow-up of the census district and the location of the city within that window? Cadillac 03:19, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried this with the calgary location Image:Calgary-locations.png, and I'm not pleased at all with the result. A few resons (or excuses) why it looks so bad:
- pixelated look of higher resolution census division - is not due to enlarging of an image, but to the highly jagged contour of the actual census line (I used very precise vector data, and that's just how the division are, outlining land parcels probably)
- vast land extent make precise contours of city limits (metropolitan areas) look very small on lower scale maps, so my opinion is that simple dots look better on such maps (possibly with the exception of calgary and edmonton)
- so far I don't have vector data of census subdivisions (such as municipal districts, improvement areas), that could further devide a location map and thus a map insert style would make more sense. Qyd 16:40, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Census division maps

[edit]

I've uploaded a changed map for division 6 Image:Division No. 6, Alberta Location.png. It has an insert of a general canada map, and the division floats above the alberta map. Should I go ahead and change them all? Qyd 17:15, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that looks impressive. Also the yellow square at the town/village is good as well. Good job ! Cadillac 22:40, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
thanks. I'll go ahead and relace all alberta census maps.Qyd 01:23, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
