2010 reorganization

[edit]

At the moment, this category looks like just a bunch of subcats named Category:NGC 1023, etc., that contain no information about the objects themselves. I've started trying to fix this by using the brief descriptions at wikipedia:List of NGC objects (1–999) to put descriptions on the individual cat pages (see, for example, Category:NGC 1), and categorize them into the correct constellation categories and subcats based on object type.

I've done the first hundred objects "by hand" (with the aid of a spreadsheet to semi-automate the process) to get a feel for the issues involved. I think I have it pretty much down at this point, and have prepared descriptions for objects 101–999 already. I just need to plunk them down in the respective category pages, preferably with the help of a bot.

But before I do that, I wanted to get other people's opinions of what's been done so far. Note that Category:NGC Galaxies and Category:NGC objects from 1 to 1000 are old cats that I'm replacing by Category:NGC galaxies and Category:NGC objects 1–999, respectively. (See also Category:NGC objects by number.)

In particular, do you agree with pointing to the corresponding Wikipedia article even if it doesn't exist? Or should I point to the lists at WP for all of them? I think it should be one or the other, since we're not going to keep track of which ones do and don't have articles over at WP to keep this in sync.

Eventually, I'll be looking into a bot to do the rest of the work. I just wanted some feedback first. - dcljr (talk) 23:13, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea. 76.66.200.95 04:52, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Which one? Pointing to individual WP articles or the lists of NGC objects?
