Parent categories

[edit]

There are a couple of good reasons why polka should not be a subcategory of music or musical_genres. First among these is the fact that polka is parent of polka_dance, which obviously is neither music nor a musical genre. Similarly, polka should not be a subcat of dance because it is parent of polka_music. The other reason may be less obvious. Images of polka dancing are quite different from polka music files (e.g., sheet music images, ogg files), which is why distinct categories exist for polka_dance and polka_music. Furthermore, it's logical that polka_dance is a subcat of both polka and dance. However, if we allow polka to also be a subcat of dance, then dance will be both parent and grandparent of polka_dance -- which violates a fundamental rule of categorization. The same problem applies to music. This is why polka is not a suitable subcat of dance or music, or any of their subcats. Having said this, I have no clue how to appropriately categorize polka. If it absolutely must be categorized and no suitable category can be found then perhaps it should be deleted. Lambtron (talk) 20:23, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
