National Monument?[edit]

@BMacZero and Ruff tuff cream puff: A pair of edits by the two of you have effectively placed this category as a subcat of Category:National Monuments of the United States by name. That seems wrong to me. The San Juan Islands National Monument adds up to a few square miles out of an entire archipelago. Many individual islands in the San Juans are each considerably bigger than the National Monument. Moran State Park on Orcas is, all on its own, five times larger than the National Monument. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: Is that the case? Comparing File:San Juan Islands map.png to [1], it actually seems that the Monument is slightly larger than the "San Juan Islands". This structure does seem weird, though, either way Category:San Juan Islands National Monument should probably be created as a parent or child (edit: sorry, simultaneous edits didn't conflict). – BMacZero (🗩) 16:32, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@BMacZero: The article (which I linked above) is pretty clear: the National Monument consists of some rock formations and islets scattered through the archipelago.
I do think a subcat is in order, and then a deeper subcat for each specific thing that constitutes part of the National Monument (since they are not anything like continguous). I think the real problem here is that no one made any serious effort to track this as they uploaded photos. Note that the table on the en-wiki page has exactly zero photos, unlike most other similar tables.
There probably isn't a big hurry to do this, and I suspect that it won't happen all at once but, yes, it would be good if we start to build out and populate that hierarchy. - Jmabel ! talk 17:11, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@BMacZero: The legend of the map says the designation refers to BLM lands within this boundary. There aren't many BLM lands within this boundary. - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Okay, makes sense. I at least started a subcategory for the National Monument and moved a few files that self-identify as being in the Monument to it. – BMacZero (🗩) 05:07, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
