African film and TV industry stakeholders and others who have access and rights to high-quality images such as headshots, film stills, behind-the-scenes shots, film and festival posters, award shows, and company logos, are encouraged to upload their images so that Wikipedia articles can be measurably enhanced. The images may also be showcased on the forthcoming African Film and Television portal launching in April.

A note about film posters on English Wikipedia.

On English Wikipedia, editors can upload images of promotional film posters under the Fair Usage principle, and under which the overwhelming majority of film posters on Wikipedia are uploaded. However, poster images copied from other sources found on the internet lack the quality and high resolution of original images uploaded onto Wikimedia Commons.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO UPLOAD IMAGES ON WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

  • Images are an essential element of Wikipedia . They bring dynamism and color to Wikipedia pages and make them more compelling to readers.
  • For Wikipedia articles centered on the film and TV industry, this entails images of industry creatives and professionals; stills from films and TV series; images of film and festival posters; industry events; logos; and even behind-the-scenes photos from movie sets.
  • The catch: Wikipedia editors can't simply upload any image that can be found on the internet. There are strict guidelines and images must be free to reuse on Wikipedia, i.e., free-license.
  • So, what can you do? Upload high-quality, high-resolution images that you or your organization have rights to on Wikimedia Commons. It's quick and easy. Once on Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia editors can use these images for Wikipedia articles associated with the topic.
DON'T MISS THIS LAST STEP

Once you've updated your image(s), you'll be prompted to send a standard permissions notice to the Volunteer Response Team (VRT) at Wikimedia Commons. You can do so with either a basic email template or via a permissions wizard. Without completing this step, your image(s) will automatically be deleted.
