Commons is a large base of multimedia resources, especially photographs and images. A part of the Wikimedia Foundation's global knowledge, it contains images and multimedia files that may be used in Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other projects.

Anyone may upload materials to the Commons as long as the copyright statuses of the works are in accordance with the copyright policies of the Commons and/or if the copyright statuses of the works have expired. It is very important that you contribute to the Commons to increase the amount of available information and to provide free knowledge to humanity.

However, it's important to state that the Commons only allows free content (See the official Commons policy). All unfree material or improperly labeled material will be removed.

In addition to international copyright laws that the Commons follows, there are some copyright stipulations in Argentina law which, are in some cases, more permissive. You may find the licenses which can be used to catalog works in the list of special copyright markers of Argentina.

Here we will give some general terms for helping the Commons, but please also read the FAQ and the First steps, our "Getting Started Guide".

Commons es una gran base de recursos multimedia, especialmente de fotografías e imágenes. Parte del proyecto de conocimiento global de la Wikimedia Foundation, es a su vez contenedor de imágenes y archivos multimedia que pueden ser usados en Wikipedia, Wikcionario y otros proyectos de la Wikimedia Foundation.

Todos pueden subir material a Commons, siempre y cuando las normas de derechos del autor de la obra estén de acuerdo con la política de Commons, o cuando estos derechos hayan vencido. Es muy importante que ayudes a Commons con tu aporte para agrandar la cantidad de información disponible, y así ayudar a brindar conocimiento gratuito y libre a toda la humanidad.

Sin embargo, es muy importante tener en cuenta que las imágenes subidas deben respetar las condiciones de Commons que solo permiten contenido libre (ver la política oficial de Wikimedia Commons), y todo material que no sea libre, o que no esté correctamente catalogado será eliminado.

Además de las leyes internacionales del copyright por las que se rige Commons, hay ciertas diferencias en la legislatura argentina que son, en algunos casos, más permisivas. Podés encontrar licencias para catalogar tales trabajos entre las marcas de derechos de autor para Argentina.

Aquí te daremos algunas lineas generales acerca de como ayudar en Commons, pero es muy recomendable leer las Preguntas Frecuentes y la Guía de Primeros Pasos.

Where you can take material/De dónde puedo sacar material

Different examples of works with a free license:

• Photos or diagrams you have made yourself. Photos or diagrams that you have taken from websites or you have not made yourself should not be published.
• Scanned photos from Argentine publications that had been published 25 years ago or more. You must mention the name and date of the publications.
• Images of films whose directors, writers, and producers had died over 50 years ago.

Algunos ejemplos de trabajos de licencia libre.

• Fotos o diagramas que hayas hecho vos mismo. Fotos o diagramas sacados de sitios web o que no hayas hecho vos mismo no pueden ser publicados.
• Fotos escaneadas de revistas publicadas en Argentina hace 25 años o más (hay que citar el nombre y fecha de la publicación).
• Imágenes de películas cuyos directores, guionistas y productores hayan fallecido hace más de 50 años.

Characteristics of images uploaded here/Qué características deben tener las imágenes

Anything that gives a better idea about the discussed topic, but has a quality and importance for an encyclopedia, a landscape of a place that has a Wikipedia article, a picture or photo of a historical figure, diagrams based on official data, scanned images of old publications, and much more.

Cualquier cosa que sirva para tener una mejor idea acerca del tema que se esta hablando, pero que tenga una calidad e importancia de estar en una enciclopedia; un paisaje de un lugar que tenga un artículo, una foto o cuadro de un personaje histórico, diagramas basados en datos oficiales, imágenes escaneadas de antiguas publicaciones y muchos más.

• Panoramic photo of the Hill of the Window/Foto panorámica del Cerro de la Ventana

Photos of important places and regions are welcome, but when possible ensure there are no people in them, or at least the photographs are not closely focused on the people.

Fotos de paisajes de lugares y regiones importantes son bienvenidas, pero en lo posible que no haya personas en ella, o por lo menos que no estén enfocadas de cerca.

• A photo of Eva "Evita" Perón, or a portrait of José de San Martín/Foto de Eva "Evita" Perón, o Retrato de José de San Martín

It is very important that articles have illustrations of political and other historical figures. Try to have good quality images that are as large as possible, especially if you are scanning them. Remember that photos uploaded on the Commons must have been published over 25 years ago. For illustrations, in order to have upload one, the author of the illustration had to have died over 70 years ago.

Muy importantes para ilustrar artículos de políticos y otras figuras históricas. Tratá que las imágenes tengan buena calidad, mas allá del tamaño, sobre todo si las estás escaneando. Si se trata de fotos, recordá que debieron haberse publicado hace más de 25 años, y si se trata de una ilustración, que deben haber pasado más de 70 años desde la muerte de su autor.

• Original maps of the Basilica of Luján/Planos originales de la Basílica de Luján.

Maps, diagrams, and/or illustrations of a public building or famous building that serve to illustrate the inside construction of that building

Planos, diagramas o ilustraciones de un edificio público o famoso sirven para ilustrar la construcción interior de un edificio.

• A table of average monthly temperatures and the average annual rainfall in Córdoba./Cuadro mensual de temperaturas medias y precipitaciones anuales de la ciudad de Córdoba.

Diagrams and syntactic tables based on relevant official data such as population, climate, the economy, education, etc. You have to make the diagrams yourself and you have to specify the source of the data.

Diagramas y cuadros sintácticos basados en datos oficiales acerca de datos relevantes, como ser población, clima, economía, educación, etc. A estos diagramas tenés que haberlos hecho vos mismo y especificar en qué fuente oficial están basados.

• Photos of common household objects/Fotos de objetos industriales comunes

If you take them yourself, you can photograph common household objects (a table, a knife, a television, etc.)

Si vos mismo realizás las fotos de este tipo de objetos (una mesa, un cuchillo, un televisor, etc.)

• Scanned photo of Ricardo Bochini in a 1981 issue of El Gráfico/Foto escaneada de Ricardo Bochini del Gráfico de 1981

You can scan photographs (but not pictures or diagrams) of publications that had been published over 25 years ago, but you must include information about the publication (example: El Gráfico, Year 24, No. 788, July 1981).

Podés escanear fotografías (pero no dibujos o diagramas) de publicaciones de más de 25 años, pero tenes que detallar la información de la publicación (ej: El Gráfico, Año 24, Nro:788, Julio de 1981).

• In general, something that you would not find in an encyclopedia/En lineas generales, nada que no pudieras ver en una enciclopedia cualquiera.

Although we accept images of that place on the Commons, photographs with people in the foreground do not serve a purpose on here.

Aunque no haya una imagen en Commons de ese lugar, fotos con personas en primer plano no sirven.

• Photo of a poster or other publicity of the latest Disney film/Foto de la propaganda de la última película de dibujitos de Disney.

Even if you have taken the photo, the rights to that photo will belong to the copyright holder (unless it is a panoramic photo in which the poster is not an important part of the image)

Aunque saques vos mismo la foto, los derechos de las imágenes son de otra persona (salvo que sea una foto panorámica donde esa imagen no sea parte importante de la composición).

• Logo of a company/Logotipo de una empresa

In general, even if you created the image of the logo, the companies retain the copyright to the images of the logo

En general, aunque vos lo hayas dibujado, las empresas retienen derechos de autor sobre los mismos.

• A very old photo I found on the internet/Foto viejísima que encontré en internet.

If you do not know where an image comes from, you cannot assume anything about the copyright, even when you are sure that the anonymous author died a long time ago or you think that it was published over 25 years ago.

Si no sabés de donde proviene una imagen, no podés asumir nada acerca de los derechos de ella. Aún cuando estés seguro que el autor anónimo de esa obra haya muerto hace muchísimo, o que creas que haya sido publicada hace mas de 25 años.

• Covers and images inside of books or magazines/Fotos de portadas o interiores de libros o revistas

In general taking photos of copyrighted content in books is not allowed.

En general tomar una foto de un libro que conserva derechos de autor vigentes no está permitido.

• Screenshots of programs or systems/Screenshots de programas o sistemas.

The authors of the programs and systems maintain the rights of screenshot images. For example, you cannot upload photographs of Google Earth screenshots or screenshots of your favorite commercial video game. However you are allowed to upload screenshots of freely licensed programs.

Los autores de tales mantienen los derechos sobre tales imágenes. Por ejemplo, no podés tomar imágenes de Google Earth, ni una captura de pantalla de tu jueguito comercial favorito. Pero si podés capturar contenido de programas de licencia libre.

How to upload files/Cómo subir los archivos

First, register on the Wikimedia Commons (Log in / create account), then you may start uploading content (Upload file), indicating the license type (e.g. for a photo that you took, "Multi-license GFDL & all CC-BY-SA").

Primero tenés que registrarte en el Wikimedia Commons (Log in / create account). Luego podés empezar a subir contenidos (Upload file), indicando el tipo de licencia (ej. para una foto que hayas sacado vos, Multi-license GFDL & all CC-BY-SA).

Categorizing photos/Categorizar las fotos

In the photos that you submit, please add corresponding categories (for example: Buildings of Argentina) so others can find them.

A las fotos que subís, para que otros usuarios puedan encontrarlas tenés que agregarle las categorías correspondientes (Ej: Buildings of Argentina).

Citing the source/Citar el origen

It is essential to state where the work comes from (for example, if you took a photo, state that the photo is yours). If this data is not present, the photo is usually deleted seven days after it is uploaded.

Es imprescindible que especifiques cuál es el origen del trabajo (por ejemplo, si se trata de una foto, indicar que es un trabajo propio tuyo). Si este dato no está, la foto suele borrarse a los siete días de subida.

Choosing the license/Elección de una licencia

It is also essential to state which licenses apply to the images you upload. If you took a photo that you are uploading, we recommend that you upload with the multilicense GFDL and CC-BY-SA-3.0 and above.

These two licenses allow the image to be used in any GNU project (such as Linux) and they also allow the image to be re-used and modified, subject to the license of the resulting work, which would be compatible with that of the original.

También es imprescindible que especifiques qué tipo de licencia vas a poner a las imágenes que subas. Si la foto la sacaste vos te recomendamos que la subas con multilicencia GFDL y CC-BY-SA-3.0 y anteriores.

Estas dos licencias permiten que la imagen sea usada en cualquier proyecto GNU (como por ejemplo Linux), pero tambien para ser modificada y re-utilizada siempre que la licencia del trabajo resultante sea compatible con la del original.

Top considerations before starting/Últimas consideraciones antes de empezar

Please do not be discouraged if others correct your work or even if there is an error in the license and the work is deleted. Please do not forget that this is a work built with input from contributors, all with the same goal. Nobody is against you. Ask about what you did wrong or why a certain image is not accepted here.
