Wiki Loves Folklore (WLF) stands as a global photographic competition that invites photographers to contribute media, encompassing photographs, videos, and audio, showcasing their local folk culture on Wikimedia Commons under free licenses. These contributions are intended for use on Wikipedia and other platforms with appropriate attribution. The annual Wiki Loves Folklore photography contest takes place from February 1st to March 31st each year, focusing on various aspects of folk culture such as folk dances, music, activities, games, cuisine, traditional attire, folklore, and traditions. This includes ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional songs and dances, folk plays, games, seasonal events, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology, and more. The campaign is dedicated to safeguarding the world's intangible cultural heritage.

Aligned with the principles of the 2003 UNESCO Convention, the Wiki Loves Folklore International photography contest serves as a crucial catalyst for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. By showcasing such heritage on Wikimedia Commons, Wiki Loves Folklore ensures its transmission to future generations, enhancing accessibility and relevance in the modern world.

The Igbo community actively participates in the contest by narrating the story of Igbo cultural heritage through images, videos, or audio. Thereby ensuring its transmission to future generations, enhancing accessibility and relevance in the modern world. To maximize the utility of the images, an associated gender gap edit-a-thon (Feminism and Folklore) will take place on Igbo content. This edit-a-thon aims to create or expand articles on feminism, women's biographies, and gender-focused topics within the Igbo Wikipedia.
