Emma Lazarus

Emma Lazarus (1849–1887) was an American poet born in New York City. She is best known for writing The New Colossus, a sonnet written on 2 November 1883 that was engraved on a bronze tablet and put inside the base of the Statue of Liberty 20 years later in 1903.
